Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure performed to address infections or damage within the innermost portion of a tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues, and when it becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, trauma, or other factors, it can cause severe pain and lead to further complications if left untreated.
The root canal procedure involves several steps to alleviate pain and preserve the natural tooth structure. Initially, the dentist or endodontist administers local anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure. Then, they create an access opening in the top of the tooth to reach the infected or damaged pulp.
Next, the infected or damaged pulp tissue is carefully removed from the tooth’s root canals using specialized instruments. The canals are then cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate any remaining bacteria or debris. In some cases, medication may be placed inside the canals to combat infection and promote healing.
Once the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped, they are filled and sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to prevent recontamination. Finally, a filling or crown is placed over the tooth to restore its strength and functionality.
